You  have probably heard about it. You know it is important. Maybe you were

already using rankingCoach and you might have run into  the task where you have to create a sitemap. But what is it? For some of you it may not be clear what a sitemap is and what it exactly does for your website. Therefore, this article will go over what a sitemap is, how it benefits your website and how rankingCoach helps you to create and submit a sitemap.

While there are different types of sitemaps, we will focus on the one that is most important for SEO, the XML sitemap. An XML sitemap is literally a map of your website where all your subpages are listed. This document helps search engines better understand your website while crawling it. Sitemaps make it easy for search engines like Google to find all your web pages that would otherwise not be indexed or missed by them. The XML sitemap allows you to specify additional information about each URL that you have. Information like when the page was updated, how often the site changes and how important the page is for the website will be clear for search engines thanks to an XML sitemap.

You can see a search engine as a spider and your website as its web, and by having an XML sitemap, you help the spider to easily crawl to all your pages.

So how does this benefit you?

Having an XML sitemap allows data and keywords to be evaluated faster, which means that changes to your website will be found quicker and will be better evaluated by search engines.  When you are optimizing your website for search engines, you want the search engines to notice all the great changes you made so that you can reach those top rankings in Google! Therefore, it is important to create and submit an XML sitemap so it can be found quickly and efficiently.

So how do you create a sitemap and how can you submit a sitemap?

This is where rankingCoach will help you!

rankingCoach has many customized tasks for you to optimize your website, including tasks about the XML sitemap. First, rankingCoach helps you to create a sitemap. Creating a sitemap depends on your CMS, however, all tasks in rankingCoach are customized to your CMS, so the task will explain to you exactly what you have to do in order to create a sitemap. Moreover,  the task will contain a video tutorial that shows you exactly how you can create a sitemap in your CMS.

Once you created your XML sitemap, it is important that you submit your sitemap to Google’s index. This helps Google to analyze your site more easily and quickly. To do so, you need to add your sitemap to Google Search Console. Before getting to this step, rankingCoach helps you with creating a Google Search console account if you did not have one yet.

rankingCoach will show you in the task exactly how you can submit your sitemap to Google in Google Search Console with the help of instructions and a video tutorial.

The status of the sitemap in Google search console will tell you if you successfully submitted your sitemap. The status can either be : “Success”, “Has errors” and “Couldn’t fetch”. In case you see that there has been an error or that it could not be fetched, it means that Google encountered an error when attempting to crawl a URL in your sitemap.

To understand which error it is and how you can solve it, Google Search Console has a complete error list to help you solve this problem. In order to see the error list and the solutions, please click here
