Summary
1. What are keywords?
Keywords are the words we enter in search engines when looking for something specific. It can be one word (“restaurant”) or a series of words (“best italian restaurant in New York”).
Different keywords will trigger different results in the search engine’s result pages as Google and its competitors always try to provide users with results that match the intent of their search as closely as possible.
2. What roles do keywords play in SEO?
Google uses the content of your website to determine how relevant your webpage is for a specific search query and where it should rank in its search results.
Therefore, you should optimize your webpage’s content for the keyword you wish your page to rank for. By optimizing, we mean integrating the keyword at several key places : in the meta title, the meta description, the headings …
3. How to choose the best keywords for your business?
Keywords are a great tool to finetune your SEO strategy and make sure your website is visible to your specific target group:
Put yourself in your customers’ shoes and choose keywords that they use to look for services or products like yours.
Only select keywords that accurately describe what you have to offer.
Use a keyword research tool giving information about how easy it is to rank for a keyword and its search volume.
Avoid selecting too many keywords which are very hard to rank for.
Avoid keywords that have no search volume at all.
Do not be afraid to go for longer keywords made up of four or more words, they are called long-tail keywords.
Try as many keyword configurations as you can think of (conjugate verbs, switch singular phrases to plural …) in order to find the keywords with the perfect balance between search volume and the level of competition.
Enter your keywords in Google and remove from your keywords selection the ones which trigger results that are too broad or have nothing to do with what you are offering, because it means Google does not associate these keywords with the same search intent as you do.
