rankingCoach is the perfect application to help optimise your website to be more visible online. However, in order to optimise your website rankingCoach needs to be able to scan your website to determine its current SEO status. To enable rankingCoach to analyse your website, rankingCoach will ask you in the very first step of the onboarding process to enter your business’s website.

In other words, to enter your business’s website in rankingCoach simply means you have to enter the URL of your website. Make sure to enter the root URL, the one leading to your home page.

You can only work with an existing website in rankingCoach, as your website needs to be live and accessible in order to optimise it. Therefore, website’s name must always be registered before you can use it. In case you enter a non-existing website, you will be unable to proceed to the next step.

Keep in mind that if your website is in different languages, you need to add the URL corresponding to the language and market you want to optimize. Here you can learn more from Google about managing a website for different languages. If you want to optimize the website for each language, then you will need to add more projects to your subscription, because they count as separate websites.

What is a domain?

Your domain, or domain name, is the name of your website. It is the address where internet users can access your website. Computers use IP addresses so that computers can be identified on the internet. IP addresses consist however of a series of numbers, which may be difficult for many internet users to remember. Therefore, domain names were developed to identify entities on the internet. Domain names can be any combination of letters and numbers and domain names are all unique and it can be used in many different domain extensions such as .com, .net. and more.

You might have noticed that some website URLS start with HTTP and others with HTTPS. HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, and HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. The HTTP allows web browsers and servers to communicate the exchange of data. HTTP is focussed on presenting the information, but does not focus on how the information travels from one place to another, which means HTTP can potentially be altered, which could result in the information and the receiver of the information being more vulnerable. HTTPS on the other hand, is not the opposite of HTTP, but rather an extension of HTTP, but much more secure. HTTPS protects the communication between the browser and the server from potential attackers. Having HTTPS in your URL gives a sense of security, confidentiality and trustworthiness to your website visitors.

You can recognise an HTTPS website by the green lock icon in the URL bar. When you are dealing with an HTTP website, you can see a red lock in the URL domain, warning visitors that the website might not be safe.

HTTP has been seen as a “negative” signal to Google over the last years due to its lack of security. Moreover, many users abandon their purchase if they realize their data was sent over an insecure connection. In order to attract more traffic to your website and to create more potential customers, it is therefore very important to have an HTTPS website, as this creates a sense of security and integrity for your visitors.

Do you want to know more about HTTPS and how to make your website as secure as possible? Get in touch with your web hosting provider!

If you already have a HTTPS domain, do not forget to enter the full URL, including “https://”, when you enter your domain name in rankingCoach.

What are redirections and why do we need them? They are a way of sending your visitors to a URL they did not specifically request because the content they are looking for was moved to that URL.

If your domain used to be “mycompany.org”, but you moved your website to “mycompany.com”, you still want the people using the .org URL to find your website or you might lose customers. By setting up a proper redirection, you will make sure a user entering “mycompany.org” in their browser bar will automatically be brought to mycompany.com.

There are several types of redirection: temporary ones and permanent ones. It is very important to use those carefully as they could impact your SEO and your rankings. If you would like to create redirections for your website but you are not sure how to proceed, ask your CMS or your web hosting provider for advice.

If you have one or several domains redirecting to your main domain, make sure you enter the URL of your main domain, the one you are editing and working on, when setting up your rankingCoach account, otherwise you might have issues validating your search engines tasks.

Every time you mark a task as “Done”, our software scans the source code of your website to check whether the task has been completed successfully. If you enter a URL with a redirection, rankingCoach will not be able to check the correct URL in which the changes are made. So it is important to connect the primary domain to rankingCoach during your onboarding.
